And So They Came with Signs and Celebration
It Felt Good to Scream in the Company of Like-minded Strangers
Tucson came out strong at the Hands Off Rally today in Reid Park. I ran into a friend who had parked at El Con and became one of a steady stream of chanting, invigorated protesters walking down Alvernon to the gathering along 22nd.
Bobbing handmade signs, they were cheered on with honks and thumbs up from motorists, some of whom had signs of their own that they waved out the windows.
A woman walked up to me and slipped her arm into mine and said, “Doesn’t this feel wonderful?” Uh huh, it did.
It’s too early this afternoon to estimate numbers, but thousands of people lined the streets and meandered along the pathway in Reid Park. There were smiles all around. But heavy hearts.
Each of us has our own concerns about the Trump Administration. But today, altogether, we had but one pursuit: Get him and his gone.

A shout-out to Tucson’s “oldest drag queen,” Vera DelMar.
